The Four Mandatory Chevening Essays
Essay 1: Leadership & Influence
Chevening looks for individuals who can influence others and lead projects.
- How to write: Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to describe a specific time you led a team or solved a difficult problem. Focus on your actions, not just the team's.
Essay 2: Networking and Relationship Building
You must demonstrate your capacity to build professional networks.
- How to write: Explain how you maintain relationships with colleagues, mentors, or clients. Describe how you plan to engage with the global Chevening alumni community in your home country.
Essay 3: Studying in the UK
You must select three different Master's courses at UK universities.
- How to write: Detail why you chose these specific courses. Reference specific modules, professors, or research papers. Explain why the UK education system is superior for your subject area.
Essay 4: Career Goals and Return Plan
Chevening requires all scholars to return to their home country for at least two years after graduation.
- How to write: Explain how your studies will address development challenges in your home country. Define clear short-term (1-2 years) and long-term (5-10 years) goals.
Eligibility Checklist
- Undergraduate Degree: Completed and sufficient to enter a UK Master's program.
- Work Experience: At least 2,800 hours of professional work experience (includes internships, volunteering, and full-time roles).
- Three Course Applications: Must apply to three eligible UK university courses.
