Step-by-Step Guide to the Fully-Funded MEXT Scholarship in Japan
The MEXT Scholarship (Monbukagakusho) is a fully-funded scholarship awarded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. It is one of the most generous scholarships in the world, covering full university tuition, round-trip airfare, and providing a monthly living allowance.
There are two primary routes to secure a MEXT scholarship: the Embassy Recommendation route and the University Recommendation route.
Scholarship Benefits and Coverage
- Tuition Fees: 100% waived for matriculation and tuition.
- Monthly Stipend:
- Undergraduate: ¥117,000 JPY per month.
- Master's: ¥144,000 JPY per month.
- PhD: ¥145,000 JPY per month.
- Airfare: Return economy class flights between Japan and your home country.
The Two Application Pathways
Pathway A: Embassy Recommendation (Most Common)
You apply through the Japanese Embassy or Consulate General in your home country.
- Document Screening: Submit academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and research plans.
- Written Exams: Pass mandatory written tests (English, Japanese, and subject-specific exams like mathematics or science).
- Interview: Pass a panel interview at the embassy.
- University Placement: Secure a Letter of Acceptance from a Japanese university before the final MEXT approval.
Pathway B: University Recommendation
You apply directly to a Japanese university that has a MEXT quota. The university evaluates your academic record and nominates you to the ministry. No written exams at the embassy are required.
