Meeting the Dutch Financial Proof and Residence Permit Requirements

Before the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) issues your student residence permit (VVR), they must receive proof that you have sufficient financial resources to pay for your tuition fees and cover your daily living expenses in the Netherlands.

In this guide, we break down the financial requirements and the acceptable methods to prove your funds.

1. How Much Money Do You Need to Show?

Your total financial proof must cover:

  1. First-Year Tuition Fees: The exact tuition amount for your first academic year, as specified in your university admission letter.
  2. Annual Living Costs: Under current IND regulations, international students must show at least €1,218 per month (totaling €14,616 for the year).

2. Acceptable Methods of Financial Proof

Method A: Direct Deposit to University (Most Common)

The simplest and most reliable method is transferring the required living costs (€14,616) plus your tuition fee directly to your Dutch university's bank account.

  • The university holds your living costs in a trust account.
  • After you land in the Netherlands and open a Dutch bank account, the university will refund the entire €14,616 to your account (either in a lump sum or in monthly installments of €1,218).

Method B: Personal Bank Account

You can show a bank statement in your own name from a recognized international bank. The statement must show a balance of at least €14,616 (plus tuition) and must be easily accessible in the Netherlands.

Method C: Scholarship

An official confirmation letter from a recognized scholarship provider (like the Holland Scholarship or Orange Tulip Scholarship) detailing the award amount and duration of coverage.

3. The Annual Study Progress Check (MOBIUS Rule)

Once you receive your VVR residence permit, you must maintain satisfactory academic progress to keep it.

  • The rule: You must achieve at least 50% of the credits (ECTS) allocated for your course each academic year.
  • If you fall below this threshold without a valid medical or personal excuse, the university is legally required to report you to the IND, which will result in the cancellation of your residence permit.
