Step-by-Step Sweden Residence Permit for Higher Education Guide

If you are a non-EU/EEA student planning to study a Bachelor, Master, or PhD program in Sweden for more than three months, you must apply for a Residence Permit for Higher Education (uppehållstillstånd för högre utbildning). Sweden does not use a traditional visa stamp system; instead, you receive a physical residence permit card before traveling.

In this guide, we break down the Swedish residence permit process managed by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket).

Step 1: Secure Admission & Pay First Tuition Installment

You must apply for Swedish programs via the centralized portal (University Admissions Sweden). Once accepted:

  1. The university will issue your tuition fee invoice.
  2. Pay the first tuition fee installment (usually covers the first semester).
  3. The university will notify Migrationsverket as soon as your payment is processed.

Step 2: Organize Your Financial Proof

Sweden requires proof of financial maintenance.

  • The requirement: You must show at least SEK 10,314 per month for the duration of your permit (usually 10 months, totaling SEK 103,140 for the first year).
  • The funds must be held in a personal bank statement under your own name. Joint accounts or parents' accounts are generally not accepted unless you present specific sponsorship proofs.

Step 3: Complete Online Application (Migrationsverket)

Submit your application on the official Swedish Migration Agency portal.

  1. Fill out the application form detailing your course and personal history.
  2. Upload clear color scans of:
    • Your passport (all pages showing stamps/visas).
    • University letter of admission.
    • Payment receipt for the first tuition installment.
    • Personal bank statement showing SEK 103,140.
  3. Pay the application fee (currently SEK 1,500).

Step 4: Book Biometric Appointment at Swedish Embassy

After filing online, you must visit a local Swedish Embassy or Consulate General to present your original passport and register your biometrics (photo and fingerprints).

Step 5: Receive Your Residence Permit Card

Migrationsverket processing takes 1 to 3 months. Once approved, your plastic Residence Permit Card is produced in Sweden and shipped to the embassy, where you can collect it before booking your travel.
