Swedish Student Visa Financial Requirements and Maintenance Checks

When evaluating applications for a student residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) enforces strict regulations regarding your financial self-support capabilities. If they suspect you do not have immediate access to your funds, your application will be denied.

In this guide, we review the exact Swedish maintenance requirements and how to prepare your bank statements correctly.

1. The Core Maintenance Requirement

You must prove that you can support yourself for the entire duration of your initial study permit.

  • The monthly limit: SEK 10,314 per month.
  • For a standard 10-month academic year, you must show a balance of at least SEK 103,140.
  • If you plan to bring family members (dependents), you must show additional funds:
    • Spouse/Partner: SEK 4,297.50 per month.
    • Each Child: SEK 2,578.50 per month.

2. Strict Bank Account Rules

Migrationsverket does not accept just any financial document. Your bank statement must meet these criteria:

  • Sole Ownership: The account must be a personal savings or current bank account held only in your own name. Joint accounts (even with parents) are heavily scrutinized and frequently rejected.
  • Immediate Access: You must have immediate, unrestricted access to the cash. Fixed deposit accounts that do not allow early withdrawal are not accepted.
  • Statement Date: The bank statement must be issued as close as possible to the date you submit your online application (no older than 30 days).

3. Alternative Proofs: Scholarships & Loans

If you are not using cash deposits:

  1. Academic Loans: The loan certificate must clearly state that the funds are disbursed directly to you and will be available upon your arrival.
  2. Official Scholarships: The certificate must specify the monthly award amount, the duration of funding, and the name of the sponsoring organization.
