Applying for the Swiss National Visa (Type D) for International Students

Switzerland is home to some of the world's most prestigious universities, particularly in engineering, sciences, and hospitality. Non-EU/EEA students planning to study in Switzerland for more than 90 days must apply for a Swiss National Visa (Type D). The Swiss visa process is unique because it is decentralized: your application must be approved by the cantonal migration office of the canton where your university is located.

In this guide, we break down the Swiss student visa process.

Step 1: Secure Admission from a Swiss University

Obtain your official admission letter from an accredited Swiss university (like ETH Zurich, EPFL, University of Geneva, or EHL).

Step 2: Book Your Appointment at the Swiss Embassy

Because Swiss visa processing takes 8 to 12 weeks, you must book your visa appointment as soon as you receive your admission letter.

  • Book a slot at the nearest Swiss Embassy, Consulate, or official VFS Global center.
  • The standard visa application fee is CHF 80 (payable in local currency).

Step 3: Organize Your Documents

You must submit three complete sets of visa documents. The checklist includes:

  • Three completed and signed National Visa (Type D) application forms.
  • Valid passport with two blank pages.
  • Official university acceptance letter.
  • Proof of financial resources (bank statements showing at least CHF 21,000).
  • A signed, written motivation letter detailing your study goals.
  • A signed commitment letter stating you will leave Switzerland upon graduation.
  • Academic transcripts and certificates.

Step 4: Cantonal Migration Office Verification

Once you submit your application at the consulate, your files are forwarded to the Cantonal Migration Office in Switzerland.

  • The cantonal office will review your educational background and financial stability.
  • They may request additional document verifications or verify the sponsor's assets.

Step 5: Visa Approval and Residence Permit

Once the canton approves the application, they will issue an entry authorization letter (Autorisation de saisie du visa). The embassy will then stamp the Type D visa in your passport. Within 14 days of arriving in Switzerland, you must register at your local registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle) to receive your physical residence permit (L-Permit).
